His father ran a <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/launceston-businesses\/barriball-and-sons\/\">grocers shop<\/a> in Southgate place. Ernest was educated at <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/education-around-launceston\/horwell-endowed-school\/\">Horwell Grammar school<\/a> and on leaving school he joined his father\u2019s business, later with his brother taking it over.<br \/>\nHe married Maud May Luxton at Launceston in 1901 setting up home in Church Street, Launceston before moving c.1926 to \u2018Dunstowe\u2019, <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/dunheved-road\/\">Dunheved Road<\/a>. Together they had four children two daughters Joyce May, and Enid Grace, and two sons, Ernest Roy (<em>b<\/em>.1905), and Harold Luxton (<em>b<\/em>.1907 &#8211; <em>d<\/em>.1952).<\/p>\n<p>Ernest as well a successfully running the business took a keen interest in public affairs and was a member of many organisations and committees. He was a County Councillor for the <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-parishes\/stoke-climsland\/\">Stoke Climsland<\/a> division from 1936. As a councillor, he was a member of many of the County Council\u2019s committees, including standing, joint, finance, highways, and education. He was also a member of the Launceston Board of Guardians and a trustee of the Launceston Savings Bank.<br \/>\nJust as his brother <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/daniel-barriball\/william-barriball\/\">William<\/a>, Ernest joined the town council, being first elected in 1932 until ill health forced his retirement.<br \/>\nIn 1935 he served as the president of the Launceston Agricultural Association of which he had been a member of for many years. He was also a member of the local Unemployment committee and the Launceston Old Age Pensions sub-committee and to complete his public work he served on the board of Governors of Horwell Grammar school.<br \/>\nHe was a staunch Methodist. His standing achievement was in his support and drive for the new <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/evolution-of-launcestons-healthcare\/\">Hospital<\/a> built at Longlands on ground donated by Mr <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/charles-henry-gillbard\/\">C. H. Gillbard<\/a>. Ernest was also a founder member of <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/sport-and-leisure\/launceston-golf-club\/\">Launceston Golf Club<\/a>.<br \/>\nHis two sons Roy and Harold carried on the business which finally closed just four years shy of its centenary in January 1970 with the shop in church street being taken over by Liptons.<br \/>\nAfter a long illness, Ernest died in 1946 at the age of 69 at his home \u2018Dunstowe\u2019, Dunheved road. The funeral service was held at the Wesleyan Chapel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1149\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-county-election-1932.jpg\" alt=\"ernest-barriball-county-election-1932\" width=\"288\" height=\"957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-county-election-1932.jpg 288w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-county-election-1932-90x300.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1147\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-Obituary.png\" alt=\"ernest-barriball-obituary\" width=\"324\" height=\"957\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-Obituary.png 359w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Ernest-Barriball-Obituary-102x300.png 102w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5>Ernest&#8217;s children.<\/h5>\n<p>Harold married Marjorie Walters granddaughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/henry-gardner\/\">Henry Gardner<\/a> who had run a <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/launceston-businesses\/gardners-drapery-shop\/\">drapery shop<\/a> in Launceston and lived at Penlea, Dunheved Road, next door to Dunstowe, Earnest&#8217;s home. It was when Marjorie visited her Grandad she met the \u2018boy next door\u2019 her future husband Harold. They later lived at Penlea until Harold\u2019s death in 1952 and had 2 children, Marjorie Joy and Michael Ernest Simpson.<\/p>\n<p>Enid, the youngest of the children married Stewart Fitze, the son of Launceston ironmonger and town councillor <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/sydney-john-fitze\/\">Sydney Fitze<\/a> in 1939.
