{"id":15400,"date":"2018-04-09T14:36:03","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T13:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/?page_id=15400"},"modified":"2018-04-09T14:41:51","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T13:41:51","slug":"priory-house","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/buildings-of-launceston\/priory-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Priory House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5293\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Priory-House-St.-Thomas-road-Launceston.jpg\" alt=\"Priory House, Launceston\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Priory-House-St.-Thomas-road-Launceston.jpg 600w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Priory-House-St.-Thomas-road-Launceston-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Originally built as the vicarage for St. Thomas Church around or just after what was then the <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/launceston-streets-and-roads\/new-road\/\">New Road or King William Road<\/a> (<em>todays St. Thomas Road<\/em>) was cut in 1840, by 1856 Priory House was being used for the purposes of a boarding school operated by Samuel Hicks.<\/p>\n<p><em>1859: Hicks, Samuel, school principal, Priory House, New North Road.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Advertisement; 1859 <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/launceston-businesses\/the-cornish-and-devon-post\/\">Post &amp; News<\/a>: Priory House, St Thomas New Road, Launceston.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Classical, Mathematical &amp; Commercial Boarding &amp; Day School.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The duties of this School will be resumed on Tuesday 18th January, 1859.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Prospectuses and References may be obtained on application to Mr Arthur.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The house was sold off on April 14th, 1870, being purchased by the <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-parishes\/werrington\/\">Werrington<\/a> Estate.<\/p>\n<p><em>Priory House: Sale of Superior Drawing, Dining, &amp; Bed-room Furniture, Carpets &amp;c. &amp;c.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wise &amp; Short have been favoured with instructions to Sell by Public Auction, on Thursday, the 14th Day of April, 1870, at 12 o\u2019clock for 1 o\u2019clock precisely, at the Priory House, New North Road, St Thomas, Launceston, the whole of this very superior modern Household FURNITURE &amp; EFFECTS, the property of Dr Farwell, who is about to leave the neighbourhood. The house, Garden &amp; Premises to be Let, with possession immediately after the Sale. Apply to Messrs <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/charles-gurney\/\">Gurney<\/a>, Cowlard &amp; Cowlard, Launceston.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Priory House was then sold by the representatives of Colonel Deakin of Werrington Park (<em>deceased<\/em>), on Tuesday 29th August, 1880. Dr. Wilson, the tenant (<em>rent \u00a345<\/em>) bid \u00a3690 for the property but it was knocked down to Mr. <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/james-treleaven-senior\/\">James Treleaven<\/a> for a little more. By 1887 it is again being used as a school with its principal being Mr. G. Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisements of 1887:<br \/>\n<em>Priory House, St Thomas Road.
