Before motorised transport Barriball\u2019s used to keep up to ten horses, and with horse drawn transport used to deliver to Tintagel and back in one day, starting at four a.m., with the first feed at the Wilsey Down Hotel. At one time they employed a staff of thirty hands. In 1881 Daniel was employing his two brothers John and James as Grocers apprentices and with his three sons the family were living above the shop in Southgate place. By 1901 Daniel\u2019s business had expanded with a shop opening in Church street. Two of his sons <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/daniel-barriball\/\">William<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/daniel-barriball\/ernest-barriball\/\">Ernest<\/a> had also joined him in the business with his eldest Charles, becoming a Methodist Minister.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Barriball-and-Sons-Launceston.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[44285]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44209\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Barriball-and-Sons-Launceston.jpg\" alt=\"Barriball and Sons, Curch Street, Launceston\" width=\"600\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Barriball-and-Sons-Launceston.jpg 600w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Barriball-and-Sons-Launceston-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Daniel handed control of the business to his sons who in 1909 had the Southgate premises completely rebuilt to plans by Otho B. Peter. After the rebuilding of the stores, the firm gave a \u2018celebration\u2019 dinner to \u2018christen\u2019 their new building, and Mr Edwin Davey responded to the toast to the staff given by Mr John Barriball, brother of the founder.<br \/>\nThe dinner was held in the Working Lad\u2019s Institute (<em>Brotherhood Hall<\/em>).
