His father was a well known auctioneer running his business from Launceston. On leaving school Horace joined his fathers business as an auctioneer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5210 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horace-Kittow-tribunal-exemption-1917.jpg\" alt=\"horace-kittow-tribunal-exemption-1917\" width=\"288\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horace-Kittow-tribunal-exemption-1917.jpg 581w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Horace-Kittow-tribunal-exemption-1917-255x300.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the First World War he worked for the Board of Agriculture detailing crop returns for over 40 parishes in Devon and Cornwall with the responsibility for the weekly purchase and supply of cattle for the army in east Cornwall. He was also the surveyor for the Devon War Agricultural Committee. With these responsibilities he asked for exemption from military service in 1917 being granted a postponement. In 1932 he was made an Alderman. He was a member of the Housing and Town planning, Markets, Highways, Public Health, Fire Brigade, Rating and Housing committees. He married Gladys Winnifred Palmer at Launceston in 1920 and they set up home at Lawrence house, Castle street, Launceston. Gladys became a JP in 1942. He was also a member of the Dunheved lodge and the secretary for the Launceston Agricultural association. He was associated with the Conservative club in Launceston.<br \/>\nHorace died in 1958. His wife, Gladys, gave <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/buildings-of-launceston\/lawrence-house\/\">Lawrence house<\/a> and its furnishings and fixings to the National Trust with also an endowment.
