His father was a lawyer who held every senior office in the town\u2019s council including a long stint (<em>1874 &#8211; 1885<\/em>) as the Town Clerk. Otho had two brothers Apsley and <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-people\/richard-peter\/claude-peter\/\">Claude<\/a> (<em>who took over from his father as Town Clerk in 1885<\/em>) who followed into the family\u2019s legal practice, and one sister Adeline Mary. Otho, being artistic, followed a different path to his father and brothers and became an architect.<br \/>\nOtho married Ann Peter at North Hill on the 18th of March 1879 and they had three children, Rosalie Mary Petre born 1880, Winifred Annie born 1882 and Arthur Granville born 1884.<br \/>\nHe designed or part designed many of the notable buildings around the town such as the present Guildhall as well as helping in the restoration of Egloskerry, Jacobstow and Lewannick churches. His most notable restoration work is on the Southgate Arch which had been purchased by his father, Richard. Richard also purchased the old cottage that had stood on the corner of Madford lane and had it demolished to make way for the pedestrian arch and walkway designed by Otho. The refurbishment of the Southgate including the adding of battlements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5362\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5362\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Craigmore-House-Launceston.jpg\" alt=\"craigmore-house-launceston\" width=\"336\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Craigmore-House-Launceston.jpg 563w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Craigmore-House-Launceston-282x300.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Craigmore House, Windmill Hill.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Craigmore (<em>the family home which has now been demolished<\/em>) on Windmill hill was another of his designs.<br \/>\nAs has already been mentioned he was an accomplished artist and much of his work is available for all to see at the <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/buildings-of-launceston\/lawrence-house\/\">Lawrence House Museum<\/a> in Castle street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5367\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-2.png\" alt=\"otho-pete-2\" width=\"391\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-2.png 391w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-2-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5366\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-1.png\" alt=\"otho-pete-1\" width=\"275\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-1.png 386w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Otho-Pete-1-300x254.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><br \/>\nIn 1883 along with his father, Peter, he wrote the seminal book \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/histories-of-launceston-and-dunheved-by-Otho-and-Richard-Peter-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The Histories of Launceston and Dunheved<\/a>\u2019\u00a0 (<em>below left<\/em>) and if this wasn\u2019t enough, Otho was also a keen archaeologist and was a strong advocate in the locating and preservation of the Priory at St. Thomas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5380\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/13633.jpg\" alt=\"13633\" width=\"214\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/13633.jpg 510w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/13633-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5379\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Priory-discovery-article-in-the-Daily-Gazette-for-Middlesbrough-15-February-1893.jpg\" alt=\"priory-discovery-article-in-the-daily-gazette-for-middlesbrough-15-february-1893\" width=\"347\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Priory-discovery-article-in-the-Daily-Gazette-for-Middlesbrough-15-February-1893.jpg 587w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Priory-discovery-article-in-the-Daily-Gazette-for-Middlesbrough-15-February-1893-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><br \/>\nHe died at his home of Northernhaye, Launceston on the 26th of April 1937.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the funeral took place yesterday (<em>Thursday<\/em>) morning, the<br \/>\nBorough flag fluttered at half mast from the historic Castle, which had often been the subject of his penmanship.<br \/>\nThe Mayor and Corporation attended in state the service at St Mary\u2019s Church, the maces, carried by the Town Sergeants, being veiled in black.<br \/>\nThe Vicar (<em>Canon WH Rigg, DD.<\/em>), and Rev CD Day (<em>Vicar of St Thomas<\/em>) conducted the service, the interment taking place at Launceston cemetery. . . \u201c<br \/>\nThe list of mourners is long and contains the most illustrious names of the town, from the Corporation to magistrates, from members of staff of Peter, Peter &amp; Sons to local doctors.<br \/>\nThe funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr H Hoskin, and the hearse by the White Hart Hotel and mourning coaches by the Castle Garage.
