His father was part of the local Peter\u2019s solicitors in Launceston. He was educated at <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/buildings-of-launceston\/pendruccombe-house\/\">Pendruccombe school<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/education-around-launceston\/launceston-college\/\">Dunheved College<\/a> and Blundells.<br \/>He began studying law but like so many of his generation Stuart\u2019s life was interupted by World War One and he served as a Second Lieutenant with the 5th Battalion of the Duke of Cornwall\u2019s Light Infantry seeing action in Palestine. He eventually rose to the rank of Captain.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5398\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/S.-L.-Peter.jpg\" alt=\"s-l-peter\" width=\"257\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/S.-L.-Peter.jpg 398w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/S.-L.-Peter-163x300.jpg 163w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In November 1919 he was successful in in obtaining a 1st class (<em>Honours<\/em>) and was also awarded a Law Society prize after being placed ninth in a list of 294 candidates who succeeded in passing the examination. On passing his exam he joined the family\u2019s Law firm of Peter, Peter and Sons at the bottom of Windmill Hill. He had also been known to tread the boards having appeared in the <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/launceston-organisations\/launceston-amateur-dramatic-society\/\">Launceston operatic and Amateur Dramatics Society\u2019s<\/a> production of \u2018Mikado.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5397\" src=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stuart-Peter-wedding-from-Western-Times-13-January-1921.jpg\" alt=\"stuart-peter-wedding-from-western-times-13-january-1921\" width=\"255\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stuart-Peter-wedding-from-Western-Times-13-January-1921.jpg 463w, https:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stuart-Peter-wedding-from-Western-Times-13-January-1921-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><br \/>In January 1921 Stuart married Mary Lily Male at <a href=\"http:\/\/launcestonthen.co.uk\/index.php\/the-place\/churches-and-chapels-of-launceston\/st-mary-magdalene-church\/\">St. Mary Magdalene Church<\/a>, Launceston and they set up home at Trenance, Windmill Hill, Launceston. In 1925 on the retirement of his father, Claude as town clerk, Stuart took over thus continuing the family tradition started by his grandfather Richard Peter in 1874. He later also became the clerk to the borough magistrates&#8217; court. He had been president of the Launceston agricultural society, chairman of governors of Launceston College and chairman of the local Trustee Saving\u2019s Bank. He was a keen gardener and was closely associated with the Cottage garden society in the town.
