Charles was born in 1853 at Bamham, Lawhitton to William and Harriet Vosper. His father was a butcher in a business started in 1817 by Charles’s grandfather Benjamin, with a shop at an angle to the Southgate (later to be taken over by the Co-op). Charles married Emma Weeks on 21 September 21st, 1876, at Launceston and together they had seven children.
He declined to take part in the municipal life of Launceston, but was a key advocate for the construction of the new cattle market on Race Hill in 1900. Emma died in 1911, at the age of 53. One of his son’s, Edgar was in the North Devon Yeomanry before the First World War, and was sent to Egypt, where he died in 1915 of a fever. Another son, William Vosper, F.A.I., began his own auctioneer business, which later formed into Vosper and Kivell. After a short illness, Charles died on July 30th, 1917.
