RICHARD PETER: Mr Richard Peter, the third child of John Peter, was born at Bodmin on the 9th October, 1809, and lived to the unusual age of over 100 years; he died 15 August, 1910. Buried St Mary Magdalene Aug 19, 1910.
He was educated for the law and was duly admitted an Attorney, and subsequently, under the Judicature Act of 1873, his designation was changed to that of Solicitor.
He practised in Launceston for 51 years and retired in 1889. In January, 1890, a Commission of the Peace was granted to Launceston, in which Mr Peter is one of the first ten Justices named. In 1894 he was made a J.P. for the County of Cornwall. He also filled the Municipal Offices of Auditor, Councillor, Alderman, and Mayor of Launceston.
From 1874 to 1885 he held the office of Town Clerk, which he resigned in the latter year. In 1847 he married Anne Sophia, daughter of John and Mary Smith, by whom he had Lynton Petre, who died Aug 6th, 1863, at The Cottage, aged 15 years: Apsley Petre, Claude Hurst, Otho Bathurst, and Adeline Mary.

Articled to Benjamin Hart Lyne, solicitor, Liskeard; one of the three founders in 1832 of the Liskeard Scientific institute and by invitation attended its jubilee celebration 10 Oct 1882; admitted solicitor 1838; town clerk of Launceston 1874, resigned 16 Feb 1885, Mayor of Launceston 1864; Associate of British Archaeological Association 1876-85; Joint author, with his son OB Peter of a History of Launceston 1885*. Married 11 May 1847 at Werrington, Anne Sophia dau of George and Mary Smith of Suffolk,

Apsley Petre born 1 October, 1849, bapt Launceston; admitted solicitor 1870; of the firm Cecil Bray and Peter of Holsworthy and Stratton, mrd 15 Apr 1882 at Shipbourne, Kent, Sarah, youngest dau of T Hodges, of Woodside, Shipbourne, issue Editha Mary b 3 Nov 1883. On the 3rd inst., at the Cottage, Holsworthy, the wife of Apsley Petre Peter, solicitor, of a daughter. [C & D Nov 10th , 1883 edition].
Claude Hurst born 15 Mar 1852, bapt Launceston; admitted solicitor 1875; at Launceston since 1875, firm Peter & Son; town clerk of Launceston 16 Feb 1885, mrd 18 Apr 1882 at Sittingbourne, Lillie Barton Harris, dau of WJ Harris, coroner for the county of Kent; issue Claude Selborne, b Northernhaye, Launceston 23 Jan, 1883; Lilian Petre b Northernhaye 20 Jan 1884; and a daughter.
Claude Hurst Peter became Town Clerk in February 1885, and remained until 1925, when his son Stuart Luttrell Peter took over.

Otho Bathurst b 11 Feb. 1854, bapt Launceston, Assoc of R Inst of British architects 1876; resident at Northernhaye, Launceston 1883; mrd 18 Mar 1879 at Northhill Church, Annie, dau of Arthur Peter of Langstone, Northhill. She was b 2 May, 1854, issue 3 children – Rosalie Mary Petre b 10 Apr 1880; Winifred Annie b Northernhaye 24 Oct 1882; Arthur Granville b 30 Sep 1884.
4. Adeline Mary b 5 Oct 1861. Her translation of the German story of “Rubezail” appeared in vol 6 of The Dunheved Mirror 1880. Mrd 7 Aug 1883 at Launceston, John Terrel Williams, who was educated St Bartholomew’s Hospital, MRCS Eng, and LSA 1867; in practice at Barrow in Furness 1885, issue Frieda Mary Petre.
C & D August 11th, 1883:- Marriages: Williams – Peter. August 7th, at St Mary Magdalene Church, Launceston, by the Reverend WW Martyn, rector of Lifton, assisted by the Reverend CE Gandy; John Terrel Williams of Barrow-in-Furness, surgeon, to Adeline Mary, daughter of Richard Peter, solicitor and town clerk, Launceston. The service took place at 8.30 am, and the bride and ‘groom left for their new home in Barrow-in-Furness by the 10.30 am train
The bridesmaids were Miss Ethel Matthews, ‘groom’s niece, and Miss Rose Peter, niece of the bride. Rosalie never married;
Winifred Annie Peter, second child of OB Peter, architect, of Northernhaye, was born 24 October, 1882, and married Reginald Palmer in 1908, living at Northernhaye, and dying 4 February, 1967. Palmer died 1910. One child – Winifred Joyce Palmer, spinster. Born 25 June, 1909, died 17 Feb, 1987.

Arthur Peter given Langstone, North Hill in 1805. Married daughter of Dawe of Tresmarrow.
The Dawe family emigrated to Canada from Tresmarrow circa 1908, taking with them the ‘screaming skull’. The skull was returned to Launceston in 2001, and is now on display in the Lawrence House. museum.

Claude Hurst Peter: Born at Launceston 15 March, 1852, his early education was at Launceston Grammar School by the late Rev S Childs Clarke; at Cheltenham College, in 1870 articled to his father and brother [M/s R & AP Peter, solicitors], and five years later admitted as a Solicitor. He was a member of the Church of England and a strong Liberal.

Mr Gerald Peter lived at ‘The Bungalow’, renamed ‘The Laurels’, in Dunheved Road and moved to Craigmore, at the top of Windmill, in 1900.

A marriage of local interest took place very quietly on Wednesday morning at St Mary Magdalene Church, Launceston, between Mr Stuart Luttrel Peter, youngest son of Mr and Mrs CH Peter, Craigmore, Launceston, and Miss Mary Lilly Male, youngest daughter of the late Nicholas Male and of Mrs Male, Reechgrove, Launceston. The bride [who was given away by her cousin, Mr George Martin, of Tremeddon, Liskeard] wore a navy coat frock embroidered in grey, with grey marabout cape and grey feather togue.
