    Good afternoon,I am hoping you can help me. I have just found that my Great Grandmother died in 1945 at Pages Cross House. Looking on line i see it was once a work house, could you tell me if it was still a work house in 1945 or some type of home for the poor. Her husband died before her so wonder if that’s why she was there. Her name was Mary Ball. I look forward to your reply .

      Hi Susan,
      It wasn’t until 1948 that the Launceston institution was transferred over to the newly formed NHS. However, by 1945 most of the inhabitants were the elderly with health problems so it is very likely that your great grandmother was placed there due to her failing health.
